How to reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

Going for a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands? Are you searching for the perfect way to reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

There are many ways through which you can reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You can reach there by flight, by sea.

How can you reach there by flight?

You can find many flights from Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai which run daily to Andaman’s capital Port Blair. Airlines such as Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, Spicejet, and Vistara are found in the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair which has the daily flights from these cities. It was expected that from 2020 international flights will operate from this airport as there were no international airports. Port Blair Airport is the ordinary airport that connects the Andaman and Nicobar with the rest of the country.

For Indians, there are no such criteria to have the special permissions so that they can travel here. But foreigners must have the permissions and they also must carry the documents which can prove their identity while travelling. Indians also need to carry documents that can tell about their nationality.

How can you reach there by sea?

The ship is the other way by which you can reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Cargo ships can take you from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair’s Haddo Jetty. You can find the boats a little bit uneasy or inconvenient because it is time-consuming, but you can find it fun by riding them. At the ferry booking office, you can buy your return ticket at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty.

If you are looking for luxuries like on the cruise ship, then you might not be able to find them on these ships. Cargo ships that are operated by the government are only meant for commercial use and they do not suit the level of comfort or luxury of passengers. There are many rooms with different levels on the ship but still, you will not get the feeling like on the cruise ship.

The ship will not reach your expectation of basic cleaning and they will not have the high standards of cleaning. If you think that these ships are known for privacy, then you are wrong. The option for many people who are travelling to Andaman and Nicobar Islands is that it is less expensive as compared to the flight. But if you are looking for very much comfort then you can avoid this and enjoy your comfort level in flight.

By Air

Travelling between the islands by seaplanes is not possible now. But if you are VIP then you can avail yourself of the feature of the inter island helicopter service. If you are planning to use this service, then you can apply at the Directorate of Civil Aviation office at the helipad, but you must apply in advance. But not many of you use this service as there is a limitation of 5kg baggage and the ticket can be quite steep.

By Ferry

The ferry is the most popular way to travel between islands. However, this can be quite tumultuous as the service is slow and there are long queues for buying tickets. It is recommended to buy a ticket a few days before your journey. You can also ask your hotel or travel agent to arrange the ferry tickets for you if booking the tickets is bothering you.

By Bus

The South, Middle, and North Andaman group are connected by road and there are ferry crossings and bridges as well, which makes it possible to travel by bus. Swaraj island has a bus service where the buses run from Port Blair to various places such as Wandoor, Baratang, Chidiya Tapu, Mayabunder, and Diglipur.

By Auto/TukTuk

There are cars or tuk-tuks available, however they are not particularly pleasant due to the uneven roads.

This can be cheaper.

By Cabs/Taxis

Although there are no Uber or Ola services in Andaman, you can get taxis or cabs to travel about. Cabs or taxis are slightly more expensive than the autos.

By Motorcycle or Bicycles

You can choose to hire motorcycles or bicycles for roaming around the island from Port Blair. You can hire them for the whole day plus it is quite affordable. If you are choosing motorcycles, then it will cost INR 500 per day but if you want to go with bicycles then it will charge around 200. You must be much more careful while riding as the roads are not that smooth.
